How to deal with a poor appetite
A small group of women are fortunate enough to get through a pregnancy without experiencing a poor appetite. Most pregnant women will not have a good appetite and this must be dealt with in the interests in giving birth to a healthy baby.
Apart from not having the desire to eat properly, many pregnant women become tired and weak. All of this combines to create a rather uncomfortable experience for the newly pregnant mother-to-be. Some women even experience a sense of unwellness during the early stages of pregnancy and this also contributes to poor eating patterns.
Even though newly pregnant women have an incredible urge to eat, it is not always possible to do so. Certain foods are off putting and bring about nausea and vomiting for the expectant mothers. It is common for pregnant women to take a few nibbles of food and all of a sudden not be hungry anymore. This can be quite frustrating and concerning for pregnant women. This is totally normal and mothers-to-be should know that this will pass as the pregnancy progresses.
Women’s bodies undergo major changes when they become pregnant and this affects the body in various ways. They become adverse to certain foods even though this was not the case before. The sense of taste and smell becomes affected and this leads to poor appetite.
The biggest challenge facing pregnant women during this time is vomiting and nausea. Women find it incredibly difficult to feed themselves when they are nauseous at every turn. This certainly does not help to motivate pregnant women to want to eat. Thankfully, this will not last more than 3 months and there are ways to deal with nausea and vomiting.
The key to having a healthy appetite while pregnant is to find out what works with regards to eating patterns. This includes eating only foods which are palatable and eating smaller portions more regularly. Women will establish a routine for themselves that will work for them during this crucial period of the pregnancy. They will notice that they have strange food requests and that is okay.
