Breastfeeding and storing breast milk
Having a baby for the first time can be quite daunting for inexperienced moms. Moms want to know if it’s okay to store breast milk and if so, how to do so. The fact is that it is possible to store breast milk for as long as four hours at room temperature.
It’s okay to pack the breast milk with ice in a cooler bag at a temperature of 15 degrees. You can keep the milk for one full day in this way. If you want to keep the breast milk for longer, then express it and store it in a refrigerator at four degrees celsius. The milk will last for as long as 48 hours when stored in this way. The milk should be placed in the refrigerator immediately after being expressed.
Believe it or not, it’s possible to store breast milk for even longer periods of time. You can store breast milk for up to 6 months at a temperature of 20 degrees. If you freeze the milk, you can store it at the same temperature for as long as one year.
Provided that you store the milk in this way and at these temperatures, it will not become contaminated. For peace of mind, you can purchase a thermometer to ensure that the fridge is maintained at the right temperature while the milk is stored in it.
Hygiene is critical when dealing with breast milk. Hands should be washed properly before handling the milk and any related apparatus such as expressing pumps and feeding bottles. Bottles, pumps and all other related apparatus should be cleaned thoroughly using hot water and soap. Remember to rinse said apparatus thoroughly. Refrigerate the milk immediately after expressing.
You thaw the frozen milk in the same manner as you would any other frozen beverage or food. You can transfer it from the freezer to the refrigerator or you can place the container in a container of warm water.
You can store the milk in the fridge for about 24 hours once it has been thawed. You should never thaw it in a microwave oven, nor should you boil the milk. Once you decide to give the milk to the baby, you should use the milk up within one hour. Always remember to keep your hands and utensils clean while working with the breast milk. Test the temperature of the milk by splashing a drop on your inner arm.https://www.babyclub.com.sg/breastfeeding-and-storing-breast-milk/https://www.babyclub.com.sg/wp-content/uploads/breastfeeding-1.jpghttps://www.babyclub.com.sg/wp-content/uploads/breastfeeding-1-150x150.jpgBabyFeaturedHaving a baby for the first time can be quite daunting for inexperienced moms.
